A red creeping thyme lawn in full bloom between garden stepping stones

The short version

Creeping thyme forms a low, fragrant, flowering mat that takes light foot traffic and never needs mowing, thriving in hot, dry, sunny spots. This collection gathers our creeping-thyme seed and thyme-lawn blends.

What’s inside

What’s in the thyme collection

Creeping thyme is a drought-tolerant, aromatic ground cover that blooms for pollinators and takes light stepping. This collection gathers red creeping thyme and other varieties plus thyme-and-fescue lawn blends for larger areas.

NC State Extension notes creeping thyme germinates in about 14–21 days at 60–70°F from surface-sown seed, with a slow first year, a filling second year, and a dense mat by the third. The ASPCA lists common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) as non-toxic, and creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is not separately listed.

How to choose

Choosing a thyme planting

For paths and paver gaps, Elfin thyme forms the flattest and most traffic-tolerant mat. For an ornamental lawn, red creeping thyme is the fragrant, flowering classic. For a larger lawn that takes real use, a thyme-and-fescue blend combines thyme with a fine grass base for durability. For a tapestry, combine several thyme varieties.

Give thyme full sun and sharp drainage; it dislikes wet, rich, or shaded ground.
