A lawn grown from low-input plants — clover, fine fescue, creeping thyme, native grasses, moss and others — instead of thirsty conventional turf. The goal is far less mowing, water and chemicals, with more resilience and habitat value.

White clover, fine fescue and creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) are not listed as toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA, which is why they anchor our pet-safe options. A few plants sometimes sold as ground covers — yarrow, chamomile and sedum — are not, so we leave them out of pet-focused mixes.

It depends on the species and your area. The seed calculator gives a rate and total for the lawn type you choose.

Most cool-season seed goes down in early autumn or spring, when soil is warm and rain is reliable. The planting-date calculator gives a window for your location.

Clover can fill in within a few weeks; fescues, thyme and meadows take a full season to settle. Plan on one growing season before a new lawn is fully self-sustaining.

Far less, and some options barely at all. No-mow fescue and creeping thyme need only occasional cutting; moss lawns need none.
