How we review

Two named subject-matter experts review all content by domain. Olivia Milner covers ecology and plants; Alyssa Culpepper covers seeds and applications. Each reviewer’s name, role and a last-reviewed date appear on the pages they sign off, and the review is carried in the page’s structured data.

Who reviews what

Editorial process & corrections

Content is researched from primary sources — USDA and land-grant university extension turf programmes — and written to a consistent standard before expert review. Zone, seasonal and toxicity claims are checked against those sources. Pages are reviewed annually and seasonal pages are refreshed each season. To report an error, use the contact channel; the reviewer verifies it against the source and the page is corrected.

Competitive Lawn was founded by Niels Mekelenkamp, who founded the wider group including its sister company Moss & Stone Gardens LLC. Olivia Milner and Alyssa Culpepper are co-founders of Competitive Lawn and expert reviewers.

Why named reviewers matter

Most lawn-care advice online is anonymous and optimised to sell a product. Competitive Lawn does the opposite: every editorial and commercial page is signed by a named subject-matter expert whose credentials are public and verifiable, and that review is recorded in the page’s structured data. If a claim is wrong, you know who is accountable and how to report it.

The group behind the site

Competitive Lawn is part of a family of brands founded by Niels Mekelenkamp, alongside its sister company Moss & Stone Gardens. Niels’s founding insight — that moss gardens are living, biodiverse habitats rather than sterile turf — is the seed of Competitive Lawn’s mission to replace high-input lawns with low-input living ground cover. That shared mission is why the same two reviewers cover the site by domain, and why ecological and practical accuracy are treated as equally important.

How a page is reviewed

Content begins from primary sources — USDA hardiness data and land-grant university extension turf programmes — and is written to a consistent standard before it reaches a reviewer. The reviewer for that domain then checks the specifics: that hardiness zones, seeding windows and establishment steps match the cited evidence, that pet-safety statements are precise, and that nothing has been overstated to make a sale. Only then does the page carry that reviewer’s name and a last-reviewed date.

Pages are re-checked on an annual cycle, and seasonal guidance is refreshed each season, so a review date on the page reflects a real, recent check rather than a one-time sign-off. If you spot something that looks wrong, the correction route is the contact channel: the responsible reviewer verifies the report against the source, and the page is updated.
