Bulk creeping thyme seed for large areas
Buying creeping thyme seed in bulk costs less than most people expect — and far less than plugs or sod for the same ground. The numbers below are real totals for whole-lawn quantities, not “from” prices.
A 2,500 sq ft front lawn in red creeping thyme is $183.98. That is two XL bags covering the whole area from bare soil.
What bulk creeping thyme seed costs
Cheapest bulk combination for each area, from bare soil. Overseeding an existing lawn uses half the seed, so halve these figures.
| Variety | 1,000 sq ft | 2,500 sq ft | 5,000 sq ft | 10,000 sq ft | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red creeping thyme | $73.98 | $183.98 | $367.96 | $735.92 | 7.4¢ |
| Breckland thyme | $73.98 | $183.98 | $367.96 | $735.92 | 7.4¢ |
| Wild thyme | $121.98 | $303.98 | $607.96 | $1,215.92 | 12.2¢ |
| White creeping thyme | $121.98 | $303.98 | $607.96 | $1,215.92 | 12.2¢ |
| Magic Carpet thyme | $154.99 | $309.98 | $619.96 | $1,239.92 | 12.4¢ |
| Mother of thyme | $154.99 | $309.98 | $619.96 | $1,239.92 | 12.4¢ |
| Wooly thyme | $154.99 | $309.98 | $619.96 | $1,239.92 | 12.4¢ |
| Elfin thyme | $137.98 | $343.98 | $687.96 | $1,375.92 | 13.8¢ |
The variety you pick matters more than anything else at this scale. The same 5,000 sq ft lawn is $367.96 in red creeping thyme or $687.96 in Elfin — a $320 difference for identical coverage. Red creeping thyme and Breckland are the economical choices for open ground. Elfin costs more because it is the flattest and most traffic-tolerant, which is worth paying for on a path and wasted on a lawn.
Not one of these sizes? The seed calculator prices your exact area across all eight varieties, and handles slopes and paver gaps differently from open ground.
What each bag covers
| Bag | New planting | Overseeding |
|---|---|---|
| Medium Bag | 250 sq ft | 500 sq ft |
| Large Bag | 500 sq ft | 1,000 sq ft |
| XL Bag | 1,250 sq ft | 2,500 sq ft |
Why bulk means several bags, not one sack. Our largest bag covers 1,250 sq ft of new planting, so a 5,000 sq ft lawn arrives as four XL bags rather than one sack. That is deliberate — thyme seed is extremely fine and smaller packs stay easier to broadcast evenly. If you would rather have it in fewer, larger units, ask below.
We sell by coverage, not by weight. A pound of seed tells you nothing until you know the sowing rate, and that rate differs between new planting and overseeding. Square feet answer the question directly.
Two ways to buy
Buy bulk from stock
Every size above is in stock and ships in 1 to 3 business days. No account, no quote, no waiting — a large area is simply several bags in the cart.

For bulk quantities beyond our largest bag, or an awkward site, tell us the area and we will come back with a price and a lead time. If your area is in the table above you do not need this — just order.
Used only to answer your enquiry. No account is created and you are not added to a mailing list unless you ask.
What the first three years look like
This matters more at scale, because the money is real and the first season looks like nothing is happening.
If that timeline does not suit the project, say so in the enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether seed is the right route. Sometimes it is not.
Sowing a large area
Divide and weigh. Broadcasting evenly across thousands of square feet by eye does not work. Mark the area into strips and portion the seed per strip — the commonest way a large sowing fails is a heavy start and a bare finish.
Seedbed prep is most of the job. Poorly prepared ground wastes far more seed than the labour saves. Clear existing vegetation, rake smooth, firm it — and do not add compost, because thyme prefers lean soil.
On slopes over 10%, use an organic seed tackifier first. One heavy rain before germination will carry most of a large order to the bottom of the bank.
Sow in the window. Spring or early fall, soil at 60–70°F. The planting-date calculator gives your dates by zone.
What we can and cannot promise
Every bag is non-GMO seed grown in the USA, and we stand behind the germination rate on the label at the time it ships. We do not guarantee establishment — too much of that depends on your seedbed, your weather and your watering. Unopened seed can be returned within 30 days. Shipping is calculated at checkout and we ship within the US only.
Common questions
Do you sell creeping thyme seed in bulk?
Yes. Every variety comes in sizes up to an XL Bag covering 1,250 sq ft of new planting, and larger areas are simply several bags — a 5,000 sq ft lawn is four XL bags. For quantities beyond that, or if you want it packed differently, ask for a quote above.
How much does it cost to seed a 5,000 sq ft lawn?
Between $367.96 and $687.96 depending on the variety — red creeping thyme at the low end, Elfin at the high end. Both cover the same area; Elfin costs more because it is flatter and takes more foot traffic.
Do you sell creeping thyme seed by the pound?
We sell by coverage instead. Sowing rates differ between varieties and between new planting and overseeding, so a weight on its own does not tell you what you need. Every bag is labelled with the area it covers.
Is one big bag cheaper than several small ones?
Yes. Cost per square foot falls with every step up in size — red creeping thyme is 11.3¢ per sq ft in a Tiny Bag and 7.4¢ in an XL. The calculator always returns the cheapest combination, not the simplest.
Can I mix varieties across one area?
You can, and a mix often reads more naturally over a large area. Bloom times differ between varieties, so a mix flowers over a longer window than any single one.
How does this compare to plugs or sod?
Seed is far cheaper per square foot, and it is the only practical route at this scale — but it is slower. Plugs give cover in one season; seed takes two to three. The trade-off is cost against time.
How long will a large order take to arrive?
Stock sizes ship in 1 to 3 business days. Quoted quantities depend on what we have packed, and we will give you a lead time with the price.
