Live moss

A living green carpet — no seed, no mowing

Real, living moss for lawns and gardens: shade species, sun-tolerant species and moss-milkshake slurries, organically harvested in the Appalachians.

A lush living moss lawn carpeting a cool, shaded corner of a garden

The short version

This collection is live moss — not seed. It arrives as living sheets or as a moss-milkshake slurry, establishes without germination, and never needs mowing or fertiliser. Choose a shade species (sheet, carpet, fern, cushion moss) for damp, shaded ground, or a sun-tolerant species (Bryum, star moss, Racomitrium) for exposed spots. Grown and produced by our sister company Moss & Stone Gardens, organically harvested in the Appalachian mountains, USA.

What’s inside

What’s in the moss collection

Shade mosses — the classic moss-lawn species for cool, damp, shaded ground: sheet moss (our bestseller), carpet moss, turf carpet moss (the most lawn-like underfoot), fern moss, cushion moss, mood moss, haircap moss, tree apron moss and spoon-leaved moss.

Sun-tolerant mosses — yes, moss for sun: Bryum moss, star moss and sun moss (Racomitrium) handle open, exposed ground.

Moss milkshakes — blended live-moss slurries you paint or pour over larger areas; the most economical way to establish coverage: shady blend, sunny blend, cushion moss and Bryum sun moss.

Establishment suppliesMoss-Tac Pro, an organic adhesive that anchors moss on slopes, stone and vertical work while it attaches.

How to choose

Choosing your moss

Match the light first. Damp shade under trees or on the north side: any shade moss — sheet moss for broad ground, turf carpet moss where you want the most lawn-like feel, cushion or mood moss for sculptural texture. Open, exposed ground: Bryum, star moss or Racomitrium.

Then match the method to the area. Live sheets give instant cover for beds, paths and focal areas. For larger areas, a moss milkshake covers far more ground per dollar — expect green-up over a season rather than instant carpet. On slopes, boulders and stonework, tack sheets down with Moss-Tac Pro.

Traffic is light-duty. Moss takes occasional barefoot steps, not play or daily paths — use stepping stones through high-use lines. Looking for a seed-grown, moss-like cushion instead? See Irish and Scotch moss (Sagina) in the ground-cover collection.

How it goes in

Planting is three steps

  1. 1
Prep. Clear leaves and weeds, firm the soil, and rake smooth. Moss wants firm, bare, slightly acidic ground — no tilling, no fertiliser.
  2. 2
Place. Press sheets into full contact with the soil (tack with Moss-Tac Pro on slopes and stone), or paint milkshake slurry over the area.
  3. 3
Mist. Keep it moist for the first 4–6 weeks while it attaches. After establishment, rain does most of the work. Full walkthrough: the moss lawn guide.
Questions

Common questions

Is this seed?

No — everything here is living moss, shipped as sheets, clumps or blended slurry. Moss has no seed; it establishes by attaching and spreading.

Sheets or milkshake?

Sheets for instant cover on focal areas; milkshake slurry for bigger areas on a budget — it fills in over a growing season.

Can I walk on a moss lawn?

Light, occasional traffic only. For walked lines, set stepping stones and let the moss knit between them.

Does moss really grow in sun?

Most species prefer shade, but Bryum, star moss and Racomitrium are true sun-tolerant mosses once established with steady early moisture.

Not sure where to start?

Two bestsellers and a no-risk way to test.

Sheet moss is the classic shaded moss lawn; cushion moss adds sculpted texture. If you’re unsure what your yard will support, the sample box lets you trial assorted species before committing.
