Our mission and standards
Competitive Lawn exists to help people grow lower-input, more biodiverse lawns from clover, fine fescue, creeping thyme, and other ground covers. Our guides are written to be practical, honest, and grounded in evidence, so you can make good decisions before you buy or plant.
How we source information
We build our guidance on reliable sources: the USDA and university extension programmes, peer-reviewed research, and recognised references such as the ASPCA for pet-safety questions. Where a claim depends on conditions — climate, soil, or region — we say so rather than overstating results.
Expert review
Editorial and commercial pages are reviewed by a named subject-matter expert and carry a byline and a last-reviewed date. Two reviewers cover the site by domain: ecology, plant science, and education are reviewed by Olivia Milner, and seed selection, establishment, and product fit by Alyssa Culpepper. Evidence and claims
Claims that matter to buyers — that a seed is non-GMO, that a species is not on the ASPCA list of plants toxic to dogs and cats, or that an approach supports pollinators — are checked against sources and stated with appropriate care. We avoid absolute promises about outcomes that depend on how and where seed is grown.
Independence and commercial content
We sell the seed we write about, and we hold product and commercial pages to the same review standard as our guides. Recommendations reflect genuine fit for the reader’s conditions, not the price of an item.
Authorship and tools
Our content is produced with the help of digital tools and is checked by people. A named human reviewer is accountable for the accuracy of each editorial and commercial page before it carries their byline.
Updates
We review and refresh content as seasons, products, and evidence change, and we welcome corrections through our Corrections process. Competitive Lawn is part of the family of brands founded around Moss & Stone Gardens.
How we weigh sources
When sources differ, we give the most weight to primary and authoritative material: USDA and state agricultural agencies, university extension services, and peer-reviewed research, with recognised bodies such as the ASPCA for pet-safety questions. Where evidence is mixed or depends on region, soil, or climate, we describe the range rather than presenting a single result as universal, and we point readers to the conditions that matter for their site.
Fact-checking, independence, and accountability
Before a page is published, claims that affect a buying or planting decision are checked against those sources by the relevant reviewer. Commercial pages are held to the same standard as our guides, and recommendations reflect genuine fit rather than margin. A named human reviewer is accountable for each editorial and commercial page, and we revisit content on a regular cadence and whenever new evidence, a new season, or a reader report gives us reason to.
