The best lawn alternatives for drought
Low-water lawns that stay alive — and often green — through heat, dry spells and watering bans.
The short version
The most drought-proof lawns are deep-rooted and adapted to dry soil: creeping thyme and hard/sheep fescue for cool regions, and native buffalograss for the hot, dry centre and west. All three are pet-safe. They need water to establish — the drought-toughness comes later.
Why these survive
Deep roots. Plants that root deeply (fine fescue reaches 18–24 inches; buffalograss is built for the rainless plains) find moisture long after shallow turf browns out.
Dry-soil adaptation. Thyme, sedum and native grasses evolved in lean, fast-draining ground and actually prefer it to rich, watered soil.
Smart dormancy. Several go tan-but-alive in the worst heat and green up when rain returns — a feature, not a failure.

Creeping thyme, fine fescue and buffalograss are all listed (or, for grasses, not listed as toxic) by the ASPCA, so you can have a low-water lawn that’s also safe for pets. Match the plant to your climate — thyme and fescue for cooler zones, buffalograss for the hot, dry centre and west.
One drought-tough plant to flag
Yarrow is genuinely drought-hardy and you’ll see it in low-water lawn mixes — but it’s ASPCA-toxic to dogs, cats and horses. If pets graze, choose thyme, fescue or buffalograss instead. Also remember: every drought lawn still needs regular water for the first season to establish deep roots.
How to choose
Hot, dry, full sun (central/western US)? Buffalograss or a buffalograss–blue grama native lawn — near-zero irrigation in its range.
Cooler region, want green and walkable? Hard or sheep fescue, optionally blended with white clover for softness.
Sunny, well-drained, low-traffic and fragrant? Creeping thyme makes a tough, flowering drought carpet.
