Fine fescue is the lowest-maintenance cool-season lawn grass available — naturally slow-growing, naturally drought-tolerant, and naturally low in nitrogen demand. Plots are monitored twice weekly using digital image analysis to quantify green cover under sustained water deficit. How to Establish Your No-Mow Fine Fescue Lawn
All three fine fescue species germinate in 7–14 days at soil temperatures of 50–65°F. Autumn seeding is strongly preferred — cool-season establishment reduces irrigation requirements during the critical first weeks. In California and the Southwest, use the wet season (October–February) for establishment and carry the lawn through its first summer on residual soil moisture plus minimal supplemental irrigation.
- Prepare the seedbed. For bare soil, rake smooth and firm lightly. For overseeding, mow existing grass to 1.5 inches and lightly rake out thatch to expose soil surface.
- Broadcast at the surface. Sow per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns. For overseeding, sow per 1,000 sq ft. Do not bury deeply — fine fescue requires light surface contact to germinate.
- Rake lightly for soil contact. A single pass with a leaf rake is sufficient. On slopes, lightly tamp to prevent wash-out.
- Water frequently during establishment. Keep the surface moist with short, frequent waterings for 4–6 weeks until fully established. This is the period of highest water demand — once rooted, the TWCA drought tolerance activates.
- Transition to deficit irrigation. Once established, reduce irrigation to 50% of average ETo for your region. In coastal California this typically means deep watering every 10–14 days through the dry season rather than the twice-weekly schedule of a conventional lawn.
- Mow 0–2 times per year. Left unmowed, DroughtGuard grows to 12–18 inches with attractive wispy seed heads. Mow once in late spring and optionally once in early autumn for a maintained appearance. Never mow below 2 inches.
