How it works

Three phases to establishment

phase 1 (germination): keep top ½–1 inch moist, 2–3 light waterings/day
duration = germination_days(species) [clover 7–14 · fescue 7–14 · thyme 14–21]
phase 2 (establishment): taper to deeper, less frequent over ~3–4 weeks
phase 3 (established): deep + infrequent (≈1 inch/week, weather-adjusted)

New seed has no roots, so the surface must stay damp until it germinates — that means frequent, light watering, not deep soaking.

Germination windows are species-specific: clover and fine fescue in about 7–14 days, creeping thyme and buffalograss 14–21. The schedule keeps phase 1 running until your species is up, then weans the lawn onto deep, infrequent watering that drives roots down.

Worked example: clover sown in spring gets 2–3 short mistings a day for the first ~2 weeks, then about a week of once-daily, then deep watering every 3–4 days, settling into roughly an inch a week.

Common questions

How long until I can stop the daily watering?

Once seedlings are visibly up — about 1–2 weeks for clover and fescue, 2–3 for thyme. Then taper to deep, infrequent watering.

Can I overwater new seed?

Yes — standing water rots seed and breeds disease. Keep the surface damp, not soaked, and skip a cycle after rain.

Does the schedule change by season?

Spring and fall need less frequent watering than summer heat. Set the season and the tool adjusts the cycles.

Clay or sandy soil — does it matter?

A lot. Sandy soil needs shorter, more frequent cycles; clay holds water, so space cycles further apart to avoid sogginess.
