Tapestry Lawn: How to Plant a Multi-Species Grass-Free Lawn

A tapestry lawn replaces grass entirely with a woven mat of many low-growing flowering perennials — a research-backed format developed at the University of Reading that can host dramatically more pollinators than turf. What a tapestry lawn is

A tapestry lawn — also called a grass-free lawn — replaces turf grass entirely with a mix of mowing-tolerant perennial forbs (broadleaved flowering plants) that grow together into an interlaced mat of textures, layers, and colours. The format was developed and researched by Dr Lionel Smith at the University of Reading, applying ecological science to the ornamental lawn. Smith and Fellowes’ peer-reviewed trials found that grass-free lawns provide a similar level of plant cover to grass lawns while bringing floral performance to a space traditionally managed to exclude flowers — and that native-only and mixed-origin tapestry lawns host greater insect abundance than turf, with distinct insect assemblages. University of Reading trials recorded tapestry lawns attracting on the order of 80 times more pollinator visits than conventional lawns.

Choosing your species

The defining rule: use a minimum of twelve species, with no upper limit. More species means more aesthetic range, a longer flowering period, more resources for pollinators, and less chance of any one plant dominating — and unsuitable species simply die out over time. The best candidates share key traits:

  • Low-growing and mowing-tolerant — they must survive being cut.
  • Clonal spreaders — plants that spread by runners, rhizomes, or stolons to knit together and cover bare soil, or that reliably self-seed in a mown setting.
  • Flowering at low height — so bloom survives the mower.

Common tapestry components include white clover (Trifolium repens), daisy (Bellis perennis), self-heal (Prunella vulgaris), and speedwell (Veronica). Smith’s research found native species delivered the greatest floral performance, so favour plants native to your region.

⚠️ North American caution: The tapestry lawn was developed for NW Europe’s mild maritime climate (broadly USDA zones 4–8 equivalents), and some classic European component species are problematic elsewhere. Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens) is considered invasive in parts of North America, and yarrow is toxic to pets. Build your mix from regionally native, non-invasive, pet-appropriate forbs rather than copying a UK plant list wholesale.

How to plant a tapestry lawn

Clear the ground completely

A tapestry lawn is grass-free, so remove all existing turf and weeds — by lifting sod (a sod cutter to 5–10 cm), solarising under clear plastic through the hottest months, or smothering with cardboard and mulch for several weeks. A clean, weed-free start is essential.

Prefer plugs over seed

Tapestry lawns can be started from seed or plugs, but plugs give immature forbs a much higher chance of establishing and reduce competition with grass seeds already in the soil seed bank. Small plants placed in a pattern establish faster and more reliably than a broadcast sowing.

Arrange your tapestry

Plant your twelve-plus species in a random scatter or a deliberate design — either works. Space them so clonal spreaders can knit together and close the gaps over the first seasons. Choose plants that spread vegetatively or self-seed to cover bare soil and cut down on replanting.

Water in and let it weave

Water the plugs in and keep them moist as they root. Over the first one to two seasons the species spread and interlace; unsuitable ones fade and the well-adapted ones fill in. Expect the tapestry to develop its character over time rather than instantly.

The establishment timeline

Season 0 — prep
Clear all grass and weeds (sod removal, solarising, or smothering). This is the most important stage — a weed-free start decides everything.
Planting
Set 12+ species as plugs in your chosen pattern; water in and keep moist while they root.
Year 1
Plants establish and begin to spread; expect visible gaps and an uneven look. Mow lightly a few times to manage balance and weeds.
Year 2+
Clonal spreaders knit together into a closed mat; unsuitable species fade and well-adapted ones dominate their niches. The tapestry reaches its mature, self-balancing character.

Troubleshooting

One species is taking over. Usually a mowing issue — adjust frequency and height to cut back the dominant tall grower and let light reach the low ones. This rebalancing is the core management tool.
Bare patches persist. Either the species there aren’t suited to your site, or spreaders haven’t filled in yet. Give it another season, then plug in additional regionally-adapted, vegetatively-spreading forbs.
Grass keeps invading. Grass from the soil seed bank is the main threat to a grass-free lawn. This is why plugs (and thorough clearing) beat seed — hand-pull grass promptly before it establishes.
It looks messy, not tapestry-like. Early years look patchy by nature. A light, well-timed mow reads as intentional care and knits the visual together while the plants mature.

The mowing secret that makes it work

Mowing a tapestry lawn does something different from mowing turf. Smith’s research shows that both the frequency and the height of mowing shape which plants thrive and how the lawn looks. Taller species gradually take more light and shade out the low growers; mowing removes that tall growth, lets light back down to the small plants, and stresses the tall ones back to a smaller size. This periodic reset is what keeps any single species from taking over and keeps the tapestry balanced.
