How to convert your lawn

The single most important rule: you can’t simply scatter drought-tolerant seed into a living lawn. Nebraska Extension is explicit that buffalograss can’t be over-seeded into actively growing cool-season grass — the existing turf outcompetes it for water and light. So conversion means clearing the old grass first (the microclover exception aside). Here’s the reliable path:

Kill or remove the existing lawn

Strip the old grass with a sod cutter, or kill it with a non-selective herbicide. If you kill it in place, you can mow it short and leave the dead turf to prevent erosion, then seed or plug into it. Time this so the old lawn is gone before your planting window.
