Description
Custom Eco-Lawn Blend replaces guesswork with a formula. Tell us your site and goals; our seed lead designs the species mix and ratios for your conditions, explains the reasoning, and ships a blend made for your yard.
Most lawn problems start with the wrong seed for the site. A shade yard sown with a sun mix, a dry slope sown with a thirsty blend, or a play lawn with no wear tolerance will struggle no matter how well it is sown.
A custom blend fixes that at the source. Our seed lead takes your climate, soil, light, foot traffic, and goals, and formulates the species and ratios that actually fit — then documents the reasoning so you understand what you are planting and why.
What’s included
- A short intake on your site: USDA zone, sun/shade, soil, traffic, moisture, and your goals for the lawn.
- A formulated species mix and ratios chosen for your exact conditions by our seed lead.
- A written rationale explaining every species in the blend and the job it does.
- Sowing rate, timing, and establishment notes specific to your blend and zone.
- The physical custom-blended seed, shipped to you.
- ASPCA pet-safety notes for every species included.

| ✓ Your site has a specific challenge — shade, slope, drought, salt, heavy traffic — that stock mixes handle poorly. | ✗ A standard mix already fits your site well (browse the shop and save). |
| ✓ You want to understand exactly what you are planting and why. | ✗ You need the seed same-day (custom blending takes a few days). |
| ✓ You are covering a large or high-value area where getting the mix right matters. | ✗ You have not decided whether you even want an eco-lawn yet (start with a Consultation). |
Why Competitive Lawn
Every recommendation here is held to the same standard as our seed range. Guidance is reviewed by Olivia Milner, our Director of Ecology & Education, and Alyssa Culpepper, our Seed & Establishment Lead, and it is drawn from Tier-1 authorities — USDA, university cooperative extensions, the ASPCA, and EPA WaterSense — not guesswork. For a custom blend, that means the species and ratios come from someone who blends eco-lawn seed for a living, cross-checked against extension guidance for your region.
We formulate honestly: if a stock mix would serve you just as well, we will say so and point you to it rather than upsell a custom blend you do not need. And we will tell you honestly when an eco-lawn is or is not the right fit for your site or your goal, because a lawn that fails, or an application that was never going to be approved, helps no one. That honesty is the whole point of buying advice from the people who grow the seed.
Common questions
How is this different from just buying a mix?
A stock mix is averaged for everyone; a custom blend is formulated for your specific climate, soil, light, traffic, and goals, with a written rationale for every species.
Can I see the formula before you blend it?
Yes — we send the species, ratios, and rationale for your approval before blending and shipping.
What information do you need from me?
Your USDA zone or location, sun/shade, soil type, moisture, foot traffic, and what you want from the lawn. The intake walks you through it.
How long does it take?
Formulation takes a few days; after you approve, we blend and ship with a sowing guide.
Are all species pet-safe?
We label ASPCA pet-safety for every species in your blend, and can formulate a fully pet-safe mix on request.
What if a stock mix would work just as well?
We will tell you and point you to it. We would rather earn a smaller sale honestly than sell a custom blend you do not need.
