Nitrogen & Fertilizer-Savings Calculator

See how much nitrogen a clover or mixed eco-lawn fixes for free each year — and what you save on fertilizer.

What this does

Enter your lawn area and clover percentage. The calculator estimates the nitrogen your lawn fixes from the air each year, converts that to fertilizer you no longer need to buy, and shows the dollar value.

How it works

Free nitrogen from the air

N_fixed_lb/yr = area_acre × clover_fraction × N_fix_rate
N_fix_rate ≈ 100–200 lb N per acre per year (white clover)
lawn_need = area ÷ 1,000 × 2–4 lb N per 1,000 sqft/yr
$ saved = min(N_fixed, lawn_need) × N_price ($3–4 / lb N)

Clover is a legume: working with rhizobia bacteria, it pulls nitrogen from the air and fixes it in the soil, supplying up to about a third of a lawn’s nitrogen need.

Extension figures put white-clover fixation around 100–200 lb of nitrogen per acre per year — roughly 2–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft. The tool scales that by your clover fraction.

Worked example: a 5,000 sq ft lawn (about 0.115 acre) at 20% clover fixes roughly 0.115 × 0.20 × 150 ≈ 3.4 lb of nitrogen a year — enough to noticeably cut or replace synthetic feeding.

How to use it

Step by step

  1. 1. Enter your lawn area.
  2. 2. Set your clover percentage, or pick an eco-lawn preset.
  3. 3. Optionally edit the nitrogen price to match your fertilizer.
  4. 4. Read nitrogen fixed, fertilizer dollars saved, and feedings avoided.
  5. 5. Compare presets to see how more clover changes the numbers.
When to use it

Getting an accurate answer

The estimate is annual and steady-state — clover needs a season to establish before it fixes at full rate.

Your real savings depend on how much you fed before and on your soil; treat the figure as a well-sourced estimate, not a guarantee.

Data source & assumptions

Pinned to Extension nitrogen-fixation data (v2026-06). Assumptions:

  • White-clover fixation 100–200 lb N/acre/yr.
  • Lawn nitrogen need 2–4 lb N/1,000 sqft/yr.
  • Nitrogen price user-editable ($3–4/lb default).
  • Steady-state after first-season establishment.

FAQ

Common questions

Does clover really replace fertilizer?

It can supply up to about a third of a lawn’s nitrogen, and a clover-rich lawn often needs no synthetic nitrogen at all once established.

How much clover do I need?

Even 10–20% clover by area makes a real difference. The tool lets you test percentages to see the trade-off.

When does the nitrogen benefit start?

After the first full season, once clover has established and its root nodules are active.

Can I still spot-feed?

Yes — many people skip blanket feeding entirely and only address specific deficiencies. The tool shows the nitrogen you no longer need to add.
