What this does

How it works

Mows avoided, in real terms

mows_avoided = (baseline_mows − alt_mows) per year
fuel_saved = mows_avoided × 0.9 gal per mow
time_saved = mows_avoided × ~5 min per 1,000 sqft (push)
CO2_saved = fuel_saved × 19.6 lb CO2 per gallon (EPA)

A conventional lawn is mowed roughly 26–32 times across a 32-week season; low-mow blends cut that to a handful, and no-mow meadows to once or twice a year.

The tool multiplies the mows you avoid by sourced averages: about 0.9 gallons of gas per mow, roughly 5 minutes per 1,000 sq ft with a push mower, and the EPA’s 19.6 lb of CO₂ per gallon of gasoline.

Worked example: dropping a 5,000 sq ft lawn from weekly (≈26 mows) to monthly (≈8 mows) avoids 18 mows — about 16 gallons of gas and 320 lb of CO₂ a year.

When to use it

Getting an accurate answer

The defaults assume a gas mower — an electric mower keeps the time savings but zeroes out the fuel and CO₂ lines.

Fuel cost uses a price you can edit, so the dollar figure reflects your area rather than a national average.

Common questions

Where does the CO₂ number come from?

The EPA’s standard figure of 19.6 lb of CO₂ per gallon of burned gasoline, applied to the fuel you save.

I have an electric mower — still worth it?

Yes for time, no for fuel or tailpipe CO₂. The tool zeroes those lines and still shows the hours you get back.

How few mows for a no-mow lawn?

Many no-mow meadows are cut once or twice a year; low-mow fescue blends need only monthly cuts in the growing season.

Does this include trimming and edging?

No — it counts full mows. Trimming time is extra, so your real savings are usually a little higher.
