Seed Cost & Budget Calculator

Estimate total seed cost, cost per square foot, and the bag breakdown for any eco-lawn project before you buy.

What this does

Enter your lawn area, pick a product, and choose your mode — new lawn, overseed, or clover-into-grass. The calculator works out the seed weight you need, rounds up to whole bags at current catalogue prices, and returns your total cost and cost per square foot.

How it works

From area to total cost

seed_lbs = area_sqft ÷ 1,000 × rate(species, mode)
bags = round_up( seed_lbs ÷ bag_size )
total = bags × bag_price (current regular or sale price)
$/sqft = total ÷ area_sqft

The seeding rate comes straight from our seeding-rate library — the same figures the Seed Coverage Calculator uses — so the weight stays consistent across tools.

Because you can’t buy a fraction of a bag, the tool rounds up to whole bags; the leftover seed is your margin for bare spots and reseeding.

Worked example: a 2,000 sq ft new white-clover lawn at 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft needs 1.0 lb of seed — one 1 lb bag. The tool multiplies by the live bag price for your total and divides by 2,000 for the cost per square foot.

How to use it

Step by step

  1. 1. Enter your lawn area, or length × width.
  2. 2. Choose the product or species you plan to sow.
  3. 3. Pick the mode: new lawn, overseed, or clover-into-grass.
  4. 4. Read your total cost, cost per square foot, and bag breakdown.
  5. 5. Add the recommended bags to your cart in one click.
When to use it

Getting an accurate answer

Use it to compare the up-front cost of an eco-lawn against sod or conventional grass seed, or to budget a phased conversion one zone at a time.

Prices update with the catalogue, so a sale changes your total automatically — it always reflects what you’d actually pay today.

Data source & assumptions

Pinned to Competitive Lawn catalogue + seeding-rate library (v2026-06). Assumptions:

  • Rounds up to whole bags (no partial bags).
  • Uses the current catalogue regular or sale price.
  • Seeding rate drawn from the seeding-rate library.
  • Excludes shipping and tax.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the price include shipping?

No — the estimate covers seed only. Shipping and any tax are added at checkout, where you’ll see the final figure.

Why did it round up to an extra bag?

You can’t buy a partial bag, so the tool rounds up. The extra seed is useful for touch-ups and reseeding thin spots in year one.

Will the total change if there’s a sale?

Yes. The calculator reads the live catalogue price, so a sale lowers your total automatically.

Is overseeding cheaper than a new lawn?

Usually — overseed rates are a fraction of new-lawn rates, so the same area needs far less seed. Switch the mode to compare the two side by side.
