Erosion Control Grass Seed

The problem is never germination. It’s keeping the seed in place long enough to germinate. Measure the grade first — at 10% and above, sowing alone is not enough.

    How steep, and what is the soil?

    Measuring the grade

    Take a 4-foot plank and a spirit level. Rest one end on the slope, raise the other until the level reads true, and measure the gap between the raised end and the ground.

    Ten per cent is the threshold our own planting guidance names: “On slopes over 10%, apply an organic psyllium-based seed tackifier before seeding to prevent seed wash.” Above about 25% the problem changes in kind rather than degree — you are no longer holding seed, you are holding soil, and that needs a physical structure.

    And the aspect

    Most banks are not uniformly lit. A north-facing bank in Zones 3–7 receives two to four hours of indirect light for much of the year; a south-facing one bakes. Check both ends of the bank separately. A single product across a slope with a sunny top and a shaded base gives you a planting at one end.

    The band with no product. Above roughly 25%, seed on bare soil moves before it germinates whatever you do to it. What holds is a seeded erosion blanket — a biodegradable mat with seed already embedded — or terracing that reduces the effective grade. We do not sell a seeded blanket. We would rather tell you than sell you seed that washes into the gutter.

    Why slope plantings fail

    Seed washes off before it germinates

    The single failure mode behind every question on this topic. Rain moves loose seed downhill within hours, and it accumulates in a green stripe at the bottom while the top stays bare.

    Fix: a psyllium-based tackifier above 10% grade. Plant-derived, biodegradable, and it gels on contact with water to hold seed through the germination period. And cross-sow. Our own sowing guidance calls for it — “cross-sow half the seed in a second direction for even cover” — and on a slope it matters twice as much, because a single pass across the contour leaves horizontal stripes that rain then exaggerates.

    Watering washes it away

    The irrigation does what the rain would have. A sprinkler delivering heavily undoes the tackifier and moves the seed.

    Fix: “water lightly and often. Keep the surface consistently moist.” One or two light waterings a day. Misting, not soaking — several short cycles beat one long one.

    The soil is the problem, not the slope

    “Heavy clay is hard on lawns: it compacts, drains poorly, and resists rooting.” On a slope, compacted clay sheds water rather than absorbing it — so you get faster runoff and slower rooting simultaneously.

    Fix: a clay-specific mix with deep-rooting species, and patience. “Expect the biggest gains over two or three seasons as roots work the clay.”

    The one we cannot fix: above about 25%, seed is the wrong product

    Not a seed-quality question. Loose soil at that angle is moving before anything roots into it, and the fix is physical — matting, terracing, or a retaining structure. Seed goes in after that, not instead of it. We would rather lose the sale than take it.

    USDA NRCS lists fine fescues among the grasses used for vegetative erosion control — this is the species federal soil conservation guidance names for the job, not a marketing claim.

    Why the clover matters more on a slope than on a flat lawn. Two reasons, both practical. It closes the canopy fast, and exposed soil is what washes. Grass crowns leave gaps between them for months; clover fills those gaps in weeks. And it fixes its own nitrogen — which matters here specifically because “heavy feeding tends to run off compacted ground.” Fertiliser applied to a slope ends up in the drain. A planting that feeds itself does not need it.

    Rated Excellent for slopes and embankments, and for low-mow and no-mow areas“fine fescues stay low; mow rarely or not at all.” That last point is underrated: “a real advantage on a grade that is awkward or unsafe to mow.” For many people the strongest case for this product is not erosion at all — it is never taking a mower onto a bank again.

    Leave it long. “Leave it long for the deepest roots and the best soil-holding.” Mowing short on a slope works directly against what you planted it for.

    Choose your slope mix

    Heavy or compacted soil

    This is a soil-improving lawn, and the framing matters. It is not a lawn that tolerates clay — it is a lawn that changes it. Clover taproots open channels; fescue roots build fibrous structure; infiltration improves season by season.

    Expect the biggest gains over two or three seasons. Rated only Moderate for “fast results on hardpan”“soil improvement builds over seasons, not weeks.” If you need the bank stable by next spring, tackifier and SlopeLock; if you want the clay genuinely better in three years, this.

    First-winter cover

    ScarletStitch · crimson clover — “dense autumn germination covers bare soil through winter, preventing erosion.” An annual, so it dies after bloom — and that is the point. Sown in autumn alongside the permanent mix, it covers the soil through the wettest months while the perennials root, then dies back and feeds the stand.

    For a bank sown in autumn, this is the most useful thing on the page. The first winter is when a new planting is most vulnerable, and it is the one period the permanent species cannot protect themselves through.

    Method

    How to sow a slope

    1. Prepare a firm, weed-free seedbed. Rake to a fine, level surface — level meaning even, not flat. For overseeding an existing bank, mow to 1.5–2 inches and scratch up thin or bare areas so seed reaches soil.
    2. Apply tackifier if the grade exceeds 10%. Before sowing, per the product instructions.
    3. Broadcast, and cross-sow. Half the seed walking across the contour, half walking up and down. Sow at roughly half rate when overseeding.
    4. Keep the seed shallow. Rake lightly for soil contact, then roll or tamp. Do not bury fine clover and fescue seed — it needs light contact with the surface.
    5. Water lightly and often. One or two light waterings a day until seedlings appear — typically 7–14 days for fescue and clover.
    6. Hold the first mow. Let seedlings reach 3–4 inches and root in before the first cut, then mow high — 2.5 to 3 inches — through the first season.
    Time it to the weather. Sowing before a settled spell is worth more on a slope than any technique. A downpour in the first week undoes everything above it.

    When to sow

    Autumn is better on a slope than anywhere else

    Autumn rain is gentler and more consistent than summer storms, and roots establish before the following winter’s runoff — which is the period the planting most needs to survive.

    Sowing a bank in high summer means hand-watering a slope daily for three weeks. Few people manage it, and a slope is harder to water evenly than flat ground because the water runs.

    What to expect

    The bottom comes up first

    Uneven germination top-to-bottom is the signature of a slope planting — water and seed both collect low. It is not a seed failure.

    Days 7–14Germination. Uneven — the bottom of the slope comes up first, because water and seed both collect there.
    Weeks 3–8The top catches up, or does not. Bare patches at the crown are normal and need overseeding.
    Weeks 4–6First mow once seedlings reach 3–4 inches. Cut high.
    Months 2–6Rhizomes begin knitting laterally. This is when it starts actually holding.

    Season 3On clay, the soil-structure gains become visible in drainage.

    Overseed the thin crown in the following season rather than assuming the whole planting failed. The bank is not stable until season two. Through the first winter it is still vulnerable — which is exactly why the crimson clover cover crop earns its place, and why autumn sowing beats spring.

    Do I need erosion matting?

    Can I mow a slope planted like this?

    You can, but you mostly should not — “leave it long for the deepest roots and the best soil-holding.” Fine fescues stay at 5–9 inches unmowed. Not mowing a bank is often the main reason people plant this rather than turf.

    Will it work on clay?

    Yes, and it improves it. Clover taproots and fescue roots open compacted clay over two or three seasons. Do not expect fast results — the mix is rated only Moderate for “fast results on hardpan”.

    What about a shaded bank?

    Fine fescues are among the more shade-tolerant grasses, and shady banks are rated Very Good. Below about two hours of sun, nothing establishes.

    Can I overseed a failing bank rather than starting again?

    Yes — rated Very Good for “overseeding thin slopes: broadcast to thicken a failing bank.” Mow to 1.5–2 inches, scratch up the bare areas, sow at half rate.
