Clover Lawn in Montana: Zone 4–6 Guide
If you’re considering clover to save water in Montana, we have to be straight with you: it won’t. Clover isn’t drought tolerant. What it will do is fertilise your lawn for free and feed pollinators — and MSU’s own definition of a “weed” makes a fair case for keeping it.

The water truth, first
Plenty of clover marketing sells it as a drought fix. In semi-arid Montana that claim doesn’t survive contact with the extension literature. Guidance from a comparable Rocky Mountain climate states plainly that clover is not drought tolerant and may need as much water as bluegrass or fescue, and the University of Maine — hardly a hostile witness, since it’s the source everyone quotes on clover’s benefits — describes white clover as sensitive to drought.
Meanwhile MSU notes a well-maintained Montana bluegrass lawn needs 1–1.5 inches of water a week early and late in the season and up to 2.5 inches a week in midsummer. A clover lawn doesn’t escape that arithmetic. If your real goal is a low-water yard, MSU’s own answer is native warm-season buffalograss or blue grama — and we’d rather point you there than sell you the wrong seed.
MSU’s fair definition of a weed
Here’s the flip side, and it comes from MSU rather than from us. In its lawn MontGuide, MSU defines a weed simply as an undesirable plant — and then adds something most turf publications never say: a plant may be considered a weed in one instance and beneficial in another; it is often not necessary to control every weed, and in fact many plants considered weeds provide ground cover and food and shelter to animals. That’s an unusually honest bit of extension writing, and it’s the strongest case for clover in a Montana lawn.
Clover isn’t a water strategy — but it is a legitimate, useful plant: it fixes its own nitrogen, it feeds pollinators, it holds ground, and it takes the fertiliser bag out of the equation. MSU even notes that thatch is mostly caused by over-vigorous growth, corrected by reducing nitrogen — which is exactly what a clover lawn does anyway.
Put the lawn where it’s actually used
MSU’s water-wise guidance offers the framework that should govern this decision: reduce the overall area of irrigated turf to the functional and heavily used sections of the landscape. Turf should be avoided in full shade, narrow strips, poor soils and steep slopes — those are better converted to drought-tolerant beds or water-efficient groundcovers. Applied to clover: keep a modest, irrigated lawn where the family, kids and dogs genuinely use it, and make that lawn a clover-grass mix so it feeds itself and the bees. Don’t extend an irrigated clover lawn across ground nobody walks on. MSU also notes fine fescues need less irrigation than Kentucky bluegrass while giving a similar look — so a fine-fescue-plus-clover lawn is the lower-water version of the idea, without pretending it’s xeric.

MSU’s standard Montana lawn advice happens to suit a clover lawn well — with the single exception that clover offers no water saving.
Is a clover lawn right for your Montana yard? (fit-check)
Good fit if: you want to stop fertilising, support pollinators, and improve a lawn you’re going to irrigate anyway — ideally a modest, genuinely used lawn, blended with fine fescue.
Wrong tool if: your goal is water conservation. Clover is not drought tolerant and may need as much water as bluegrass. MSU’s answer for low water is buffalograss or blue grama, or simply less irrigated turf.
Also note: you’ll be giving up broadleaf herbicides entirely — they kill clover — and clover fixes less nitrogen in acid soil, so soil-test and lime toward pH 6–7.

How much should I water a Montana lawn?
MSU’s numbers: a well-maintained bluegrass lawn in most of Montana needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week early and late in the season, rising to up to 2.5 inches per week in midsummer — minus whatever rain has fallen since the last irrigation. The technique matters as much as the volume: water in the early morning, deeply and infrequently. Frequent light watering causes shallow rooting and actually makes the lawn less drought-tolerant, and it favours weeds like annual bluegrass. Clay soils take water slowly but hold it; sandy soils drain fast and need more frequent irrigation.
What mowing height should I use for a clover lawn in Montana?
MSU recommends 2.5 to 3 inches for Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass mixes, and notes that higher mowing heights — especially in the warmer summer months — give turf deeper root systems and fewer weed problems. That suits a clover lawn well: the taller canopy shades the soil, keeps it cooler and moister, and protects the clover through summer heat. MSU’s water-wise guidance similarly recommends a 3-inch height paired with deep, infrequent watering. Keep the blade sharp, return your clippings, and don’t scalp — short mowing thins fescues and ryegrasses and stresses the whole stand.
Does clover work in Montana’s acid or alkaline soils?
Test before you seed. UMaine’s guidance is that white clover does best at pH 6 to 7, and that while it will stand at 5.5–6.5, productivity drops because nitrogen fixation is reduced — meaning the clover survives but quietly stops delivering the free fertiliser you planted it for. Since nitrogen fixation is done by Rhizobium trifolii bacteria in the root nodules, use inoculated (coated) seed, and avoid nitrogen fertiliser, which UMaine says directly impairs biological fixation. A soil test is a few dollars and tells you whether lime is needed — it’s the cheapest step in the whole project.
The right reason to buy
