Clover Lawn in Maine: Zone 3–6 Guide

Maine has one problem that decides whether your clover lawn thrives or quietly disappoints — and it isn’t the cold. Most Maine soils sit at pH 4.8–5.2. White clover wants 6–7. Close that gap and everything else follows.

Why lime unlocks the nitrogen

Caring for a clover lawn in Maine

Once the pH is right, the routine is short. Maine’s state guidance reinforces the wider caution: use slow-release formulations if you fertilise at all, apply only one-third to one-half the labelled rate, never before heavy rainfall, and skip phosphorus, which is rarely essential for established Maine lawns — excess nitrogen washed into Maine’s bays promotes algae growth and chokes marine life. Water matters too: white clover is shallow-rooted and sensitive to drought, so it wants consistent moisture rather than a dry sandy site. And never use broadleaf weed-and-feed — it kills clover.

Good fit if: you’ll soil-test and lime first, want a lawn that fertilises itself and keeps nitrogen out of the bay, and will blend clover into grass rather than going pure.

Don’t bother yet if: you won’t lime. At Maine’s typical pH of 4.8–5.2, nodulation is suppressed and you’ll get thin, yellow clover and none of the nitrogen — a wasted bag of seed.
