What Goes In a Moss Slurry, and What Ruins It
The blended-moss method is real and it works, but most of the recipes circulating online contain at least one ingredient that actively harms the moss. Here is what the slurry is actually for, what belongs in it, and the three additions that cause most failures.
A moss slurry is a delivery system, not a fertiliser. Its job is to hold living moss fragments in close contact with a surface long enough for rhizoids to grip. Everything in the mix should serve adhesion and moisture retention. Anything that feeds bacteria, raises pH or forms a sealed film works against you.

What the slurry is actually doing
Moss does not have roots. It anchors with rhizoids, which are fine filaments that grip a surface but take up almost no water or nutrients. Everything the plant needs is absorbed across its surface from rain and humidity.
That single fact explains the whole method. Establishment is not about feeding the moss or getting it into soil. It is about holding fragments still, in firm contact with a surface, in damp conditions, for the weeks it takes rhizoids to develop and grip. A slurry does that better than laying loose fragments because it is viscous enough to stay where it is put, including on vertical and irregular surfaces.
It follows that the slurry does not need to contain plant food, and that anything making the mixture more attractive to bacteria or mould is a liability rather than a bonus.
What belongs in the mix
Living moss is the only essential ingredient. It must be alive — dried decorative moss from a craft supplier will not regenerate. Use roughly equal volumes of moss and liquid. Clean off soil, leaf litter and grit first, because debris in the mix creates pockets where fragments sit on loose material rather than the surface.
Water should be rainwater where possible. Mains water is usually fine but chlorine is unhelpful to a plant that absorbs everything across its surface, and in hard-water areas the dissolved calcium nudges surface pH upward, which is the wrong direction. Leaving tap water to stand overnight deals with the chlorine.
An adhesive is what makes a slurry a slurry. A purpose-made moss adhesive is formulated to stay flexible, remain permeable and break down without feeding mould. As a stopgap, a teaspoon of unflavoured gelatin dissolved in warm water gives short-term tack, though it degrades quickly in warm weather.
That is the complete list. A working slurry is moss, water and something to make it stick.
The three additions that ruin it
Buttermilk, yoghurt and beer appear in nearly every recipe online and are the most common cause of failure. The theory is that the acidity suits moss. The practice is that you have added sugars, fats and proteins to a damp shaded surface, and what grows first is bacteria and mould. A slurry that smells sour after three days has become a mould culture with moss fragments suspended in it. If the goal is acidity, use rainwater and an acidic substrate.
Over-blending is the second. The aim is fragments, not puree. Moss regenerates from pieces of shoot with intact cells; liquidising the material to a smooth green paste destroys most of them. Use short pulses and stop while you can still see recognisable fragments. Ten seconds is usually plenty.
Any sealed or film-forming additive is the third. Products that dry to a continuous skin trap the moss underneath, cutting off the gas exchange and surface moisture uptake it depends on. If an additive dries glossy or waterproof, it is working against establishment.
Fertiliser deserves a brief mention for the same reason. It does not help, because moss takes up almost nothing through its rhizoids, and it encourages algae and competing growth on the surface you are trying to colonise.
Method
Prepare the surface first. On soil, clear existing vegetation, remove loose debris and firm the surface — moss needs contact, and a fluffy seedbed is the wrong preparation entirely. On stone or masonry, clean off dust and any residue. Established moss nearby is a good sign that conditions suit.
Blend the moss and water in short pulses until the mixture holds recognisable fragments and pours thickly, roughly the consistency of a thin batter. Stir in the adhesive.
Apply by hand or with a stiff brush, pressing it into contact rather than laying it on. A thin, even layer works better than a thick one; excess depth means the fragments underneath are smothered by the ones above.
Keep it damp for six to eight weeks. Mist frequently rather than soaking occasionally — heavy watering washes fragments out of position before they have gripped. In dry weather twice daily is not excessive for the first fortnight. Shade cloth over a newly treated area during a hot spell is worth the trouble.
Expect to see nothing for two to three weeks. Visible greening usually begins in weeks three to five, and reliable grip develops by weeks six to eight. Establishment through a full season is normal.

Where the method works and where it does not
Slurry is at its best on surfaces where loose moss will not stay put: vertical stone, boulders, statuary, pots, and shaded banks where fragments would wash downhill. It is also the practical option for covering an awkward area cheaply, because a small amount of donor moss goes a long way.
It is not the fastest route to a finished moss lawn. Laying live moss sheets gives an immediate result and establishes more reliably, because the material arrives as an intact colony rather than as fragments that must regenerate. Where budget allows and the area is flat, sheets are the better choice; slurry is better for vertical work, awkward shapes and large areas on a limited budget.
Conditions still decide the outcome. Slurry applied to a hot, dry, sunny wall will fail regardless of technique. The method changes how moss is delivered, not what moss needs.
The verdict
The blended-moss slurry is real and it works — the moss fragments do the establishing — so the goal of a good recipe is simply to keep them moist and in place while they root. Keep it to moss, water, and at most a mild acidifier or thickener; skip the buttermilk, sugar, and beer that circulate online, since those feed mould and rot rather than moss. Get the fragments onto a shaded, damp, textured surface and leave the kitchen ingredients out, and the slurry does its job.
Mistakes people make
The most damaging mistake is the dairy or beer addition, and it is worth repeating because the recipes are so widespread. The mixture ferments, mould colonises the surface, and the moss fragments die inside a film of something that was never plant food to begin with.
The second is applying to a surface that has been recently pressure-washed or treated with a moss killer. Residual biocide will kill the new application as efficiently as it killed the old growth. Leave a treated surface for several months and rinse it thoroughly first.
The third is giving up at three weeks. Nothing visible happens for the first fortnight or so, and a great many applications are scrubbed off and redone by people who assumed failure at exactly the point when rhizoids were beginning to form.
The fourth is using dried craft moss. It is sold in the same aisle as garden products and looks like the real thing, but it is dead, and no method revives it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the buttermilk method actually work?
Sometimes, in spite of the buttermilk rather than because of it. The moss fragments are doing the work; the dairy adds sugars and fats that feed mould and bacteria on a damp shaded surface. Water and a purpose-made adhesive give better results and do not smell.
How long before I see green?
