Sizing
Measure it, then size it
Add a row per area — the bank, the strip, the open ground — and give each its own product. Every bag is sized from its product page’s coverage table.
Overseeding covers roughly double. If there is anything already growing — thin thyme, patchy ground cover — say so with the switch.
The defining question
How large is the area, really?
This is the whole page. Get it wrong in one direction and you sow thin — producing a patchy stand that weeds occupy. Get it wrong in the other and you store the surplus, and thyme seed loses viability within a couple of seasons.
Pace it
An adult stride is about 2.5 feet. Pace the length, pace the width, multiply the two, then multiply the result by 6.25 (2.5 × 2.5).
A 20 by 40 pace area is 50 by 100 feet — 5,000 square feet. Most people would describe that as “a big garden” and guess 1,500.
For irregular shapes, break it into rectangles and add them together. The calculator takes multiple areas.
Add 10% for edges and overlap. Broadcasting is not precise, and running out at the far end of a bank is worse than having a little left.
And measure the slope separately
On a bank, the horizontal measurement understates the true surface. A slope with a 25-foot horizontal run at a moderate gradient has meaningfully more surface than 25 feet of flat ground. Add 10–15% on anything you would describe as a proper slope.

Before you sow
Why large thyme plantings fail
Underestimated area, sown thin
The direct consequence of not measuring. Seed spread over twice the intended area germinates sparsely, individual plants never meet, and weeds occupy the gaps before the thyme can close them.
Fix: pace it, then add 10%.
Uneven soil preparation
What is manageable over 200 sq ft becomes a day’s work over 2,000. Half-prepared ground produces half-germinated thyme, and the difference remains visible for years — thyme spreads slowly enough that it does not paper over a bad start.
Fix: prepare in sections and sow each section as you finish it, rather than preparing everything and sowing at the end.
Watering a large area consistently
Germination needs light, frequent moisture for two to three weeks. A sprinkler that soaks one end and misses the other gives you a thyme lawn at one end.
Fix: sow in autumn, when rainfall does most of the work. At scale this matters far more than it does on a small patch — you can hand-water 200 sq ft daily for three weeks. You cannot hand-water 5,000.

This is not a seed problem. Preparation, watering and weeding all scale worse than the area does, and the practical failure point for a domestic setup sits somewhere around 5,000 sq ft. The saving happens early, not at the top. Tiny to Large cuts the cost per 1,000 sq ft by 34%. Large to XL saves half a percent — 39 cents per 1,000 sq ft. We would rather tell you that than imply bulk buying saves more than it does.

A dollar apart. The reason to choose XL is that two bags distribute more evenly across a large area than five, and there is less risk of running short at the far end. Below 500 sq ft there is no bulk saving worth chasing, and leftover thyme seed loses viability within a couple of seasons. Buy what you need.
The cheaper routes almost nobody knows about

The fescue makes up the bulk and fescue seed costs less than thyme seed. You get thyme’s flowers and fragrance in a surface that also tolerates foot traffic better than pure thyme — for a quarter less.

Method at scale
Sowing a large area
The method matches any thyme planting. What changes at scale is sequence, equipment and timing.
- Prepare in sections. Remove existing vegetation, rake smooth and firm. Do not add compost or fertiliser — thyme prefers lean soil, and at scale the temptation to “improve” the ground is strongest and most damaging. Prepare and sow each section before moving to the next. Ground prepared in April and sown in June has grown a new weed crop in between.
- Broadcast at the surface. Do not bury; thyme seed needs light to germinate. Use a broadcast spreader on its finest setting, and walk the area twice at right angles — once in each direction. Thyme seed is fine enough that a single pass leaves visible stripes when it comes up, and on 2,000 sq ft those stripes are permanent for two years.
- Press for contact. A lawn roller earns its hire over anything above 2,000 sq ft. Foot pressure works but takes an afternoon.
- Water lightly and consistently. Keep the surface moist for 14–21 days at 60–70°F soil temperature.
First year at scale
Hand weeding is the real work. Over 2,500 sq ft it is a genuine commitment through the first season, and it decides whether you get a thyme planting or a weed patch with thyme in it.
Budget for it honestly before you order. If you cannot commit to weeding 2,500 sq ft, plant 1,000 well instead.

Sowing a large area in high summer means hand-watering it daily for three weeks. Almost nobody manages it, and the seed is lost rather than delayed.
What to expect
Uneven germination is the signature of a large planting
It is not a seed failure. Soil moisture varies across any sizeable area, and the drier parts come up a week or two behind. They generally catch up.
Overseed the thin patches in the following season rather than concluding the whole planting failed. A bag of Medium covers 500 sq ft of patching for $22.99. What does not catch up is weed competition. That is the one thing worth your labour.

Plants are for small areas. Seed is for anything lawn-sized.
Can I sow creeping thyme over an existing lawn?
Not successfully. Thyme cannot compete with established grass — it is slow, low and shallow-rooted against a plant that is none of those things. Large areas need the existing vegetation removed first, and that is the main reason large thyme plantings are more work than they look.
Overseeding into thin existing thyme is different and works well.
How long does a large thyme planting take to fill in?
Season two for full coverage, the same as a small one. Area does not change the timeline, only the weeding.
Do I need a spreader?
Above about 1,000 sq ft, yes. Thyme seed is fine and broadcasting it evenly by hand across a large area is genuinely difficult — the result is visible as stripes and patches for two years.

Will one heavy rain ruin it?
On flat ground, no. On any slope over 10%, quite possibly — which is why the tackifier matters. Seed moves downhill and germinates where it lands.
